How to Buy Genuine Kachi Ghani Tel Online: 7 Things to Check — Dune Aura, cold press mustard oil & masalas, Gurgaon

The demand for kachi ghani mustard oil has grown significantly over the past five years as Indian consumers have become more aware of the difference between cold pressed and refined oils. Predictably, this demand has attracted a wave of products that claim to be kachi ghani but are not.

On Amazon, Flipkart, and even local delivery apps, you'll find dozens of products labelled "kachi ghani sarson ka tel" that are either refined mustard oil, blended oil, or in some cases, adulterated oil. The price difference between genuine cold pressed and refined is real — and so is the quality difference.

Here are 7 specific things to check before you buy kachi ghani mustard oil online.

1. Check the FSSAI License Number

Every food product sold in India must carry a valid FSSAI license number — a 14-digit number starting with the state code. This is non-negotiable.

How to verify: Go to fssai.gov.in and use the "Check FSSAI License" tool. Enter the 14-digit number from the product label. It should return the manufacturer's name, address, and license validity.

If the FSSAI number is absent, invalid, or doesn't match the manufacturer's details, do not buy the product.

Red flag: Some sellers list a distributor's FSSAI number rather than the manufacturer's. This is technically non-compliant. The FSSAI number on the label should belong to the entity that produced the oil.

2. Look for "Kachi Ghani" or "Cold Pressed" — Not Just "Pure"

The word "pure" on a mustard oil label means nothing specific. "100% Pure Mustard Oil" can legally be refined mustard oil. What you're looking for is the extraction method:

  • "Kachi Ghani" — cold pressed using a traditional wooden or stone press
  • "Cold Pressed" — mechanically extracted at low temperature
  • "Expeller Pressed" — mechanically extracted (some heat generated, but no chemical solvents)

If the label says "refined mustard oil" or simply "mustard oil" without specifying the extraction method, it is refined.

Watch for: Some products say "kachi ghani style" or "kachi ghani process" — these are marketing phrases that don't guarantee cold pressing. Look for the unqualified term "kachi ghani" or "cold pressed."

3. Check the Colour in Product Photos

Genuine cold pressed mustard oil is golden-yellow to amber in colour — similar to the colour of mustard seeds themselves. It is not pale yellow and not clear.

If the product photos show pale yellow or clear oil, the oil has been refined or bleached, regardless of what the label claims.

Caveat: Product photos can be manipulated. This check is useful but not definitive. Use it alongside the other checks.

4. Read the Ingredient List

The ingredient list of genuine kachi ghani mustard oil should contain exactly one ingredient: mustard oil (or sarson ka tel).

Red flags in the ingredient list:

  • "Mustard oil, antioxidant (TBHQ)" — TBHQ is a synthetic antioxidant added to refined oils to extend shelf life. Genuine cold pressed oil doesn't need it.
  • "Mustard oil, antioxidant (BHA/BHT)" — same issue
  • Multiple oils listed — this is a blended product
  • "Edible vegetable oil" — vague and potentially misleading

Cold pressed oils have a shorter natural shelf life (6–12 months) and don't need synthetic antioxidants. The presence of TBHQ or BHA/BHT is a strong indicator of refined oil.

5. Check the Manufacturing Date and Shelf Life

Cold pressed mustard oil has a shelf life of 6–12 months from the date of manufacture. Refined mustard oil has a shelf life of 18–24 months.

If a product claiming to be kachi ghani has a shelf life of 18–24 months, it is almost certainly refined.

What to look for: Manufacturing date within the past 3–6 months. Avoid products where the manufacturing date is more than 6 months ago — even genuine cold pressed oil degrades over time.

6. Check the Price

Genuine cold pressed mustard oil costs more to produce than refined oil. The mechanical extraction process has lower yields than solvent extraction, and the shorter shelf life means higher turnover costs.

Rough price benchmarks (2025):

  • Refined mustard oil: ₹150–180 per litre
  • Genuine cold pressed mustard oil: ₹250–350 per litre

If you find a product claiming to be kachi ghani at ₹150–180 per litre, it is almost certainly refined or adulterated. The economics of genuine cold pressing don't allow for that price point.

Exception: Very large brands may achieve lower prices through scale. But even at scale, genuine cold pressed mustard oil should cost at least 30–40% more than refined.

7. Check the Seller's Reviews — Specifically for Smell and Colour

For online purchases, customer reviews are your best source of real-world quality information. Search specifically for reviews that mention:

  • Smell: Genuine kachi ghani mustard oil has a strong, pungent smell. Reviews saying "no smell" or "mild smell" are red flags.
  • Colour: Look for reviews mentioning golden or amber colour. Reviews saying "clear" or "light yellow" suggest refined oil.
  • Sediment: Cold pressed oils sometimes have natural sediment at the bottom. This is normal and actually a positive indicator of minimal processing.
  • Taste: Genuine mustard oil has a sharp, slightly bitter taste when raw. Reviews saying "tasteless" or "bland" suggest refined oil.

Ignore reviews that only comment on packaging or delivery speed — these tell you nothing about oil quality.

Bonus: The Refrigerator Test (After Purchase)

Once you receive the oil, do this simple test: place a small amount in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

  • Genuine cold pressed mustard oil: becomes slightly cloudy or semi-solid due to natural wax content
  • Refined mustard oil: remains clear and liquid

This test isn't 100% definitive, but it's a useful quick check.

Where to Buy Genuine Kachi Ghani Mustard Oil

The safest options:

  1. Directly from the manufacturer — brands that produce their own cold pressed oil and sell directly (like Dune Aura) have the most accountability and the freshest product.

  2. FSSAI-verified online platforms — some platforms have stricter verification requirements for food products.

  3. Local cold press mills — if you're in a city with traditional oil mills (many North Indian cities still have them), buying directly from the mill guarantees freshness and authenticity.

  4. Organic/natural food stores — these typically have stricter sourcing standards than general supermarkets.

The worst option: generic marketplace listings from unknown sellers with no verifiable FSSAI number and suspiciously low prices.
